Traveling with children is not easy at all. When you plan your family vacation, thinking about all the preparation and work that goes into taking care of kids can be stressful and totally ruin your trip.
But family vacations are supposed to be fun and relaxing. That’s why you’re going!
Here’s a few quick tips to make it easier to travel with kids and have more fun on your family vacation. Just thinking through a few of the basics and planning them out can relieve a ton of stress:
- Food Planning
Planning Food for Kids
When you’re eating together as a family, food isn’t too difficult. What makes it hard is the time in between meals. As you’re going to your destination, and as you move around while you’re there, your kids will get hungry, thirsty, and tired. And when that happens, God help us all.
Take plenty of snacks for your kids on the journey. Small, dry bite-sized finger food is best. Try packing cookies, dried fruits, granola bars, or cereal. Remember to have a bottle of water with you too. Sticking to water while you’re on the go is easier because you can just carry a bottle and refill in a lot of places.
Keep Your Kids Entertained and Occupied
Kids have trouble sitting in one place for too long. Whether its in the car, on a train, or on a plane, they’ll get bored, fidgety, and eventually cranky.
Depending on you’re kid’s age, take small toys or activities to entertain them. This can be something they hold, like a stuffed animal, toy car, or action figure. It can be something to occupy them like a coloring book or reading book. Or it can be something mobile device like an iPad or handheld video games. Of course, remember the headphones.
Whatever you bring, just make sure it’s light, and easy to carry. Avoid having too many pieces that you can easily lose (6 crayons will do, they don’t need their full 64-crayon set). And make sure it’s something that won’t annoy you or other travelers, like a toy that makes loud noises.
Keep Your Kids Clean
Let’s face it, kids are dirty. They will always find ways to get themselves dirty. And dirty kids can really add anxiety when you’re traveling.
Depending on where you’re going or how you’re traveling, there might not be a lot of places to easily clean up, so be prepared to clean up right where you are.
Tissues and wet wipes are great for quickly wiping off faces and hands, or wiping down seats and tables. Hand sanitizer will keep your kids from getting sick. Bring a few small plastic bags that you can throw trash in until you find a trash can, or for you to place any dirty clothes in. And in your carry bag, bring an extra set of clothes for any changes that might need to happen (for yourself and your kids!).
Enjoy Traveling with Your Kids
Traveling with kids can be stressful, but it’s supposed to be fun. If you take some time to think through the basic and be prepared, you won’t be as stressed when little mishaps and accidents occur. These family vacations will create memories that last a lifetime, so make the most of it.
