Cheap vs. Luxury: Coron vs. El Nido Travel Comparison

5 min read

Palawan. The Philippines’ crown jewel. Everyone agrees on that.

Where the debate heats up: Coron or El Nido?

After spending serious time in both, here’s the honest breakdown.

The Quick Answer

El Nido: More dramatic landscapes. Better beaches. Higher prices. More developed tourism infrastructure. Can feel crowded.

Coron: Better diving and snorkeling. More pristine lakes. Lower costs. Less polished. More adventure-raw.

Choose based on what matters to you, not Instagram popularity.

Getting There: The Logistics

El Nido

  • Fly Manila to El Nido direct (limited, expensive, small planes)
  • Or fly to Puerto Princesa + 5-6 hour van (cheaper, exhausting)
  • Ferry from Coron (4-6 hours, gorgeous route)

Coron

  • Fly Manila to Busuanga Airport (1 hour, more reliably scheduled)
  • 20-minute van ride to Coron town
  • Generally easier access than El Nido

Winner: Coron for logistics. El Nido’s access is improving but still limited.

Accommodation: What You’ll Pay

El Nido Budget

  • Hostels: $10-20/night
  • Basic fan rooms: $25-40/night
  • Mid-range with AC and pool: $60-100/night
  • Beach resorts: $150-400/night
  • Luxury island resorts (Lagen, Miniloc): $600+/night

Coron Budget

  • Hostels: $8-15/night
  • Basic rooms: $20-35/night
  • Mid-range with AC: $40-70/night
  • Beach resorts: $100-250/night
  • Luxury options: Limited compared to El Nido

Winner: Coron is 20-30% cheaper across categories. El Nido has more ultra-luxury options if you want them.

Food and Drinks: Daily Costs

El Nido

  • Local Filipino meal: $3-5
  • Mid-range restaurant: $8-15
  • Upscale dinner: $25-50
  • San Miguel beer: $1.50-3
  • Cocktails: $5-10

Coron

  • Local meal: $2-4
  • Mid-range: $6-12
  • Upscale: $15-30
  • San Miguel: $1-2
  • Cocktails: $3-7

El Nido has more restaurants, more variety, and more international cuisine. Coron’s food scene is simpler but cheaper.

Winner: Coron for value. El Nido for variety.

Island Hopping: The Main Event

El Nido Tours

Four standardized tours (A, B, C, D). Each visits different islands and lagoons. Booking is easy. Quality is consistent.

Tour A and C are most popular. Big Lagoon and Small Lagoon (Tour A) are legitimately stunning. Hidden beaches and snorkeling (Tour C) equally impressive.

Tours cost 1,400-1,800 PHP ($25-35). Includes lunch and basic gear.

Coron Tours

Less standardized. Ultimate Tour covers the highlights: Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Skeleton Wreck. Other tours focus on specific areas.

Kayangan Lake is something else entirely. Crystal clear water in a limestone amphitheater. Swimming feels unreal.

Tours cost 1,200-1,500 PHP ($20-30). Generally cheaper than El Nido.

Which is better?

El Nido: More dramatic karst formations rising from the sea. Better beaches within tours. More “wow” moments per hour.

Coron: More variety (lakes, wrecks, hot springs). Better snorkeling. Less crowded islands.

Winner: Tie. Personal preference decides.

Diving and Snorkeling

Coron wins decisively.

WWII Japanese shipwrecks make Coron world-famous among divers. A dozen wrecks in diveable depths. You can snorkel some. Skeleton Wreck is visible from the surface.

Coral gardens around Coron are healthier and less trafficked.

El Nido diving exists but isn’t the draw. The visibility is often lower. The sites aren’t as distinctive.

Diving costs:

  • Coron: $30-40 per dive
  • El Nido: $35-50 per dive

Beach Quality

El Nido wins here.

Nacpan Beach is 4 kilometers of golden sand. Las Cabañas for sunset. Seven Commandos and Papaya Beach on tours.

Coron’s beaches are good, not great. Malcapuya and Bulog Dos are beautiful but require extra tours to reach. Town-accessible beaches are average.

Winner: El Nido for beach lovers.

Crowds and Vibes

El Nido: Busier. More tourists. More nightlife. Backpacker energy. Beach bars and live music. Can feel overwhelming in peak season.

Coron: Quieter. Less developed. More local feel. Nightlife exists but is tamer. Mellow energy. Feels more like discovery.

Winner: Depends on personality. Social travelers: El Nido. Solitude seekers: Coron.

The Budget Breakdown: One Week

El Nido (7 days, budget)

  • Accommodation: $150 (hostel/basic)
  • Food: $140
  • Tours (3): $100
  • Transport/extras: $50
  • Total: ~$440

El Nido (7 days, mid-range)

  • Accommodation: $350
  • Food: $250
  • Tours/activities: $200
  • Transport/extras: $100
  • Total: ~$900

Coron (7 days, budget)

  • Accommodation: $100
  • Food: $100
  • Tours (3): $75
  • Transport/extras: $40
  • Total: ~$315

Coron (7 days, mid-range)

  • Accommodation: $250
  • Food: $180
  • Tours/activities: $150
  • Transport/extras: $70
  • Total: ~$650

The Verdict

Choose El Nido if: Beaches matter most. You want more dining and nightlife options. Budget isn’t tight. You prefer polished tourism infrastructure.

Choose Coron if: Diving and snorkeling are priorities. Budget matters. You prefer fewer crowds. You like raw, less-developed destinations.

Best of both worlds: Do both. The ferry between them is affordable and scenic. Four days each is ideal. You’ll understand why Palawan wins awards.

There’s no wrong choice here. Just different flavors of paradise.
