East Coast Australia Road Trip: Sydney to Cairns 14-Day Itinerary
Australia’s East Coast is the ultimate road trip destination. Stretching over 2,500 kilometers from the cosmopolitan harbor of Sydney to the tropical gateway of Cairns, this route offers everything from world-class surf breaks and ancient rainforests to the majestic Great Barrier Reef.
Days 1-3: Sydney and the Central Coast
Start your journey in Sydney. Spend your first day exploring the Opera House, Circular Quay, and the Royal Botanic Garden. On day two, take the ferry to Manly or do the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. On day three, pick up your rental car or campervan and head north to the Central Coast, stopping at Avoca Beach or Terrigal.
Days 4-5: Hunter Valley and Port Stephens
Indulge in some of Australia’s finest wines in the Hunter Valley. Stay overnight and then drive to Port Stephens. Known for its ‘blue water paradise,’ it’s the perfect spot for dolphin watching, sandboarding at the Stockton Sand Dunes, and hiking Mount Tomaree for panoramic views.
Days 6-7: Byron Bay
Byron Bay is a must-visit. This laid-back surf town is the easternmost point of the Australian mainland. Visit the Cape Byron Lighthouse at sunrise, take a surf lesson, and explore the boutiques and cafes in the town center.
Days 8-9: The Gold Coast and Brisbane
Cross the border into Queensland. The Gold Coast offers famous surf beaches like Snapper Rocks and Burleigh Heads. Continue north to Brisbane, Queensland’s capital. Explore the South Bank Parklands and the hipster suburbs of Fortitude Valley and West End.
Days 10-11: Noosa and the Sunshine Coast
Noosa Heads is an upscale resort town surrounded by the stunning Noosa National Park. Walk the coastal track to see dolphins and turtles, or kayak through the Noosa Everglades.
Days 12-14: The Whitsundays and Cairns
Make the long drive north (consider a stop at Airlie Beach). Take a scenic flight or boat trip to the Whitsunday Islands and Whitehaven Beach, known for its pure white silica sand. Finally, finish your trip in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.
