Hidden Gems of Western Australia: Beyond the Typical Tourist Trail

5 min read

While most travelers stick to the East Coast, Western Australia (WA) offers some of the most raw and untouched beauty in the world. Encompassing one-third of the continent, it’s a place of vast red deserts, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and unique wildlife.

1. Esperance and Cape Le Grand National Park

Located on the southern coast, Esperance is home to some of the whitest sand in Australia. At Lucky Bay, you can even see kangaroos sunbathing on the beach. The granite peaks and turquoise lagoons of Cape Le Grand are a hiker’s paradise.

2. The Ningaloo Reef and Exmouth

Unlike the Great Barrier Reef, the Ningaloo Reef is a fringe reef, meaning you can swim to it directly from the shore. From March to July, you can have the life-changing experience of swimming with whale sharks in Exmouth.

3. Karijini National Park

Deep in the Pilbara region, Karijini is an ancient landscape of spectacular gorges, hidden rock pools, and cascading waterfalls. Its iron-red rock formations are over two billion years old, offering a truly primordial experience.

4. The Kimberley Region

One of the world’s last great wilderness areas, the Kimberley is roughly the size of Germany but with a population of only 40,000. Highlights include the Bungle Bungle Range, the horizontal waterfalls of the Buccaneer Archipelago, and the remote Gibb River Road.

5. Margaret River and the South West

Known primarily for its world-class wineries, the Margaret River region also offers incredible surf, ancient tall-timber forests, and spectacular limestone caves. It’s the perfect blend of natural beauty and gourmet indulgence.
