Essential stops across the American West
One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Over 1,800 meters deep, showing unique geology that spans billions of years.
The world's first national park. Home to Old Faithful, the Grand Prismatic Spring, and an abundance of grizzly bears and wolves.
Towering cream, pink and red cliffs. Famous for the Narrows hike and the heart-pounding ascent to Angels Landing.
The "bridge that couldn't be built." An Art Deco masterpiece spanning the Golden Gate Strait in San Francisco.
The West is beautiful, but it can be unforgiving if you're unprepared.
In the Southwest, the heat is dry and deadly. Carry at least 4 liters of water per person when hiking. If you've used half your water, turn back.
Do not approach bison in Yellowstone or bears in the Sierras. They are faster than you. Keep your distance and use a zoom lens.
The West is massive. Don't try to see the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone in one weekend. You'll spend all your time in the car.
If visiting more than three parks, buy the "America the Beautiful" pass ($80). It covers entrance fees for everyone in your vehicle.
Book your car months in advance, especially in summer. Gas stations can be 100 miles apart in rural Nevada and Utah—never let your tank dip below half.
Discover and book unforgettable experiences across the West Coast
Western USA is a land of superlatives. From the deepest canyons to the tallest trees and the most dramatic coastlines, it offers an adventure that is uniquely American. Whether you're chasing sunsets in the desert or exploring the foggy streets of San Francisco, the West rewards the prepared traveler.
The "Grand Circle" in the Southwest (Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands) is the ultimate road trip destination. However, the sheer volume of visitors means you must book accommodation and permits (like Angels Landing) months in advance.
Leave No Trace principles are critical here. The desert ecosystem is fragile; a single footprint off-trail can destroy biological soil crusts that take centuries to grow. Stay on designated paths and pack out everything you pack in.
The "shoulder seasons" of spring (April-June) and fall (September-October) are the goldilocks zone. You'll avoid the triple-digit summer heat and the heavy winter snows that close many high-altitude mountain passes.
